Removing stains from concrete floors

From time to time you will get stubborn stains on polished concrete flooring that prove difficult to remove. 

Here are some helpful hints to remove even the most troublesome stains and restore your polished concrete floor

 to its former glory.

First, give the stain a good scrub with plain soap and water to remove any outer residue then use a power washer 

to blast the area exposing the offending stain.

Oil stains: Use bleach in a spray bottle to soak the area affected by the oil. Let the bleach sit for 30 minutes and 

then use a stiff nonmetallic brush to scrub the area. Finally rinse area with clean water and allow to dry naturally. 

Always take precautions when using bleach as it is a hazardous substance and ensure your working environment 

is well ventilated. Wear gloves, goggles and a safety mask if necessary.

Grease: Surprisingly cat litter is extremely effective at removing grease from polished concrete floors. Liberally 

apply the litter and allow to sit for 2 or 3 days before sweeping up. Dispose of the soiled litter in the trash can. 

If the stain remains try using dry concrete mix to the affected area and again leave for a couple of days. 

Make sure you sweep up the concrete and avoid letting it run into your sink or drain  it will cause no end 

of plumbing problems.

Tire marks: Tire marks can be easily removed from a polished concrete floor by applying a degreaser to 

the affected area. After a couple of hours give the area a scrub with soapy water and a stiff brush, 

rinse and finally allow to dry.

Very stubborn stains: If you have tried everything else and a stain has remained engrained in the floor 

you may have to try a harsher treatment such as oxalic or citric acid. These treatments are a last resort as 

they are toxic and demand care when handling. Follow the instructions on the packet to dispose of the acid 

accordingly. Do not rinse them down the drain or storm sewer as they can contaminate the water supply.

A word of caution: Be careful when using a power washer as they can be extremely powerful and may damage

 the surface of your floor. Test a small area first and use these machines on the lowest setting.
